Cell Phones and Electronic Device Guidelines

Students will not be allowed to use personal communication devices on campus during the school day. Prohibited devices include:

  • Cell phones
  • Smartwatches
  • Earbuds/headphones
  • Tablets/laptops (unless school-issued and used for instruction)
  • Gaming devices
  • Radios/pagers/other electronic communication devices

The instructional day begins when a student enters the school building and ends at the final dismissal bell. This policy applies in all areas of the campus, including classrooms, hallways, restrooms, and the cafeteria—during passing periods and lunch.

Students must keep devices out of sight, turned off or in silent mode, and unused at all times during the school day. Devices may be stored in a student's backpack.

All SHS staff will consistently uphold and enforce this policy. Students who do not comply will receive consequences in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct.

Consequences for Improper Use of Cell Phone and Electronic Device:

Note: If a student refuses to turn in their device when requested, it will be considered insubordination and addressed as a violation of the Student Code of Conduct, which may result in additional disciplinary consequences.

  1. First Offense: The device is confiscated, an office documentation is created, and the parent is contacted. The device will be returned to the student at the end of the day.
  2. Second Offense: The device is confiscated, an office documentation is created, and the parent is contacted. The device must be returned directly to a parent or guardian.
  3. Third Offense: The device is confiscated, an office documentation is created, and the student is assigned detention (either after school or Saturday School). The parent is contacted, and the device must be returned directly to a parent or guardian.
  4. Fourth Offense: The device is confiscated, a disciplinary referral is issued, and the parent is contacted. The student will serve 1 day of In-School Suspension (ISS), and the device must be returned directly to a parent or guardian.
